March Book

In the month of March we read After by Amy Efaw. This book was one of the most powerful and amazing books that I have EVER read. I was unable to go to the meeting this month, unfortunately I had other stuff that had to be done.
At the begging of the book Deven (main character) was at home like any other teenage girl who skipped school. Her mother comes home from her night ship job.... Then..... Anyway, I do not want to go into full detail in case who ever may be reading this would like to read the book. In any case Deven had a baby in her bathroom the night before the book starts, she put it into a dumpster, cops come to her apartment for a routine check to ask questions then they find out she had a child, she goes to juvenile hall, goes to court, and then the book ends......
I personally think that there MUST be another book. The way that this book ended just wanted to make me throw the book across the room!!!!! You HAVE to read it to figure out what I mean. It truly is an amazing book. Also, I am very excited because I want to read another book, and the movie.

My Change for Debt

Ms.D has found a National Debt Clock and we are supposed to think of some things that we can do to help. There are so many ideas that I have of what I can do and already do.
I do not usually throw away any glass, I save light bulbs, containers and all
my other glass products. There are a few places around that you can give them any glass and they will recycle it, a good place to go that most towns have is their local dump. Anything that is burnable I burn, I have a wood stove and it makes sense to me to burn it instead of it going into a land fill. My family hunts and fishes but doesn't catch a lot, so there is not to eat. Also, there are many stores around that I support buy buying their food and supplies. Many different stores have things that I need, so instead of going to Wal-Mart. When my clothes are too small I bring them to second hand stores, when my clothing rips I use it to fix a different piece of clothing. I also, like to make my own hats when I can by crocheting hats then I go and buy pea shoes from other people.

Double Standered

This is something that I missed so I am posting it onto the blog. This poem is "To a Lady, Who Valu’d Herself on Speaking Her Mind in a Blunt Manner, Which She Call’d Being Sincere" by
Mary Barber.

Well you Sincerity display,

A virtue wond’rous rare!

Nor value, tho’ the world should say,

You’re rude, so you’re sincere.

To be sincere, then, give me leave;

And I will frankly own,

Since you but this one virtue have,

'Twere better you had none.

This is my translation of what I think that the poem means:

*Translation*
You show honesty,
Your morals are high which make it rare,
Your value is not what they would be if it were me,
You are rude which for a man means that you care?,
If you care then let me leave be honest!,
And I will be true and honest,
Since you only have this one horrible trait,
It would be better if you didn’t have any.

This is my poem that I wrote about a double standered.

*Mine*

She works and works,
With little pay,
She went to college got that education,
With those amazing grades and references,
He works and bosses people around,
With all that free time and pay,
He went to college,
Got fine grades with unearned references.

The Secret Military War

In class we read an article for Times Magazine by Nancy Gibbs. It tells about women being raped and how they are afraid. "Military applies to chaplains" for these woman to talk to because "Not nearly enough mental-health professionals in the system" I think that this is insane and shocking. Nancy has many statistics that back her up and those also are terrifying. "3,000 women were sexually assaulted in fiscal year 2008" this statistic is for just women that are in OUR military. I have had so many friends that were, are, or are going to be in the military. All the statistics and words this woman has shown are remarkable. I knew that it happened just not that much "8% of cases that are investigated end in prosecution." Reading this made me think and it scared me.
Firstly, I think that there need to be many many more mental-health professionals for military people. If you look in the Yellow Pages you can find usually three or more pages of mental-health professionals that you can go to. There are so many places where civilians can go for help, but definitely not enough for our military woman and even men. Nancy said "Commanding officers in the field are not understanding how important this is" and I agree with her. I know that Commanding Officers do their best but still. In this article Nancy talks about a woman who went out for a cigarette without her firearm and got raped; she was afraid of being demoted if she told.
It makes me think that woman are "Don’t Ask don’t tell" a little too much. Nancy also said "Some signs that both congress and the Pentagon are getting serious" and I hope that she is right but I wish it would speed up; I know that it is not only the government that must change but the women need to be able to stand up; but how can they when they know the statistics? I think overall that there need to be more places for rape victims in the military to be able to go to, men and women.
At the end of Nancy's essay she said "What does it say if the military can’t or won’t protect the people we ask to protect us?" and i definitely agree.

Woman Venn

We made a Venn Diagram on women from Elizabeth's time of ruling and modern time.
We did this because we are reading The Taming of the Shrew
